Class Descriptions

Texas LTC– License to Carry Handgun Course (formerly CHL)

This course satisfies the Texas Department of Public Safety requirements for training to obtain a License to Carry a Handgun (LTC). The course is taught by an instructor certified by the Texas Department of Public Safety and will cover: laws that relate to weapons and to the use of deadly force; handgun use and safety; non-violent dispute resolution; and proper storage practices for handguns with an emphasis on storage practices that eliminate the possibility of accidental injury to a child. The course length is approximately five to six hours but varies with the number of students in the class. Handgun proficiency will be conducted that consists of the student firing 50 rounds with a handgun of .32 caliber or larger in a specific course of fire. Range guns are available for rental.

Handgun “101”

This course is intended for novices but others may benefit. We recommend taking this course prior to purchasing your first handgun. Students will gain a solid foundation in safety and firearm handling. The course will present information on safety, gun handling, types of pistols, and the fundamentals of pistol ownership. Several practical exercises on the firing range will be performed using a variety of pistol models available at the range. Finally, firearms cleaning and storage will be demonstrated and discussed. This is an excellent starter course for people new to the firearms sport and is usually taught one on one. It is scheduled by request.

NRA Basic Pistol Course

This course is intended for both novice and experienced firearms enthusiasts and covers all pistol action types. Novices will gain a solid foundation in safety and firearm handling, while experienced shooters often find that improving a foundation skill results in better accuracy and speed. The course will present information on safety, gun handling, types of pistols, the fundamentals of pistol marksmanship, and various pistol firing positions. Several practical exercises on the firing range will be performed using a variety of pistol action types that reinforce the classroom portion of the course. Finally, firearms cleaning, storage, and a summary of pistol sports and activities will conclude the course. Students will be awarded an NRA Basic Pistol Course certificate upon successful completion of the course.

NRA FIRST Steps Rifle Course

Similar to our pistol offerings, this NRA course will teach the fundamentals of rifle safety, handling, and marksmanship. Students will be awarded an NRA FIRST Steps Rifle Course certificate upon successful completion of the course.

Firearms Tutoring/Coaching

We provide individual tutoring on a variety of shooting skills and activities including: Hunting with rifle/pistol/shotgun, Bullseye Pistol, 3-Gun, and other firearms activities. These sessions can be delivered at your location or ours. Some activities require specific range configurations not available at all locations.

Cost for our courses varies based on the course length and venue. We prefer to negotiate favorable range fees and food pricing (if applicable) for the group for each site we utilize. Some areas have a variety of food options where students will do lunch on their own. At our range in Jacksboro, lunch is provided and is always a hit with the students.
We will make the price for each specific course clear in the registration materials we send you. Your seat in class is reserved upon payment of a $40 deposit.
Typical Fees for the James E. Smith Range, Jacksboro, TX:
Texas LTC Course (formerly CHL) – $65 includes use of range pistol and lunch.

What To Bring To Class

Students are encouraged to bring their own pistol. Student’s firearm will be inspected for safety prior to use. Range guns are available if the student does not have his/her own pistol, as well as for students to try a variety of action types and models if they wish. Other items you will need are eye protection, hearing protection, hat or cap, clothing appropriate for outdoor activity, sunscreen, and a minimum of 50 rounds of ammo for your firearm. No reloaded ammunition is allowed. If you will be using a range gun, bring 50 rounds of factory 9MM ammo or purchase it at the range.

We accept minors who have completed the fifth grade for most courses; however attendance of their parent is required. Students, sixteen years old or older may take a course without their parent present, provided that the parent has signed a permission form. If, in our opinion, your child has not reached the maturity level required for a specific course, we will discuss this with you (the parent) and either modify the course content or refund the cost of the course.

You will hear and feel the difference that using one makes. We can take your order and provide assistance with completing the ATF paperwork. Your suppressor must remain with us until your paperwork is approved but in the meantime, you can use it all you want at our range.

Do you like to shop for firearms online? We perform transfers for a small, $20 fee. Please contact us prior to initiating the transfer so we can be expecting the shipment and to prevent delays in receiving your purchase.
